So who wants more proof?
It is my firm belief that if a doctor were to examine our dear dictator right now, he’d be found to be suffering from (among other things) extreme dementia. Don’t believe me? Let him speak for himself:
*I am not at all a politician. I don’t think I’m cut out for politics. I am certainly not going to stand for election.
*Have I done anything constitutionally illegal? Yes, I did it on November 3. But did I do it before? Not once
*Remember that mindsets can not be changed through force and coercion. No idea can ever be forcibly thrust upon any one.
*Who is trying to derail the political and democratic process? Am I? Or is it some elements in the Supreme Court — the Chief Justice and his coterie — and now some elements in the political field?
*There is nothing wrong with intellectual differences flowing from freedom of thought as long as such differences remain confined to intellectual debates.
*Did I go mad..? Or suddenly, my personality changed? Am I Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde? (This one’s my favourite)
*They will suffer but they know how to survive. The people here are very hardy.
*Please give us time. Please do not accept the same level of civil liberties and human rights that you earned over centuries. We are also learning. Please give us time.
*After 11 September we joined the international coalition against terrorism and I am delighted that the majority of Pakistani people supported this decision.
*First we have to rid ourselves of hatred, of religious intolerance. We have to rebuild and realise that a mind cannot be opened by oppression…
*You cannot change hearts and minds through force. (Says the dictator)
*I appeal to my Pakistan to rise. To banish intolerance and hatred from ourselves and establish a climate of equality and brotherhood.
*Let us not be despondent. I am an optimist. I have faith in the destiny of this nation.
*We will have to take important and painful decisions.
*Chaos is being created.
*The nation is a victim of uncertainty.
*The three pillars of state - judiciary, executive and legislative - all need to work in harmony.
*We want democracy to come to Pakistan…We want sustainable democracy that takes root. I mean every word of it.
*Am I trying to usurp power, or am I trying to bring democracy to Pakistan, that is the question…You have to believe me, and take me on my word, I want to bring democracy.
*I am going to relax and play tennis and golf. (Oh dear…)
*Unfortunately, we have been up against our own people … They had strayed from the right path and become susceptible to terrorism.
*Most of the people in fact were against my writing this book at this moment, but like a good military leader (!!!), I took the decision against the major part of their advice.
*I have confronted death and defied it several times in the past because destiny and fate have always smiled on me. (Lets add delusions of grandeur to the list of ailments)
*Before I reached class 10, at the age of 15, I had been an above-average student, usually among the first four in my class. That year, however, my grades dropped dramatically. The cause: my first romance. Truth to tell, she made the first move. I was still too shy to initiate a romance, let alone woo a girl. (And this comes second)
*Our fuel was so low that we would have crashed had the army not taken control of Karachi airport. The nearly fatal confrontation with the prime minister brought me to power.
*Considered purely in military terms, the Kargil operations were a landmark in the history of the Pakistani army.
*It was nexus between Bhutto and small coterie of rulers that destroyed Pakistan. The myopic rigid attitude of (Bangladeshi leader) Sheikh Mujibur Rehman did not help matters and he played into Bhutto’s (Gen) Yahya (Khan’s) hand by remaining rooted in East Pakistan.
*She (Bhutto) would not like to go into an election because her party is not in a state to win at all.
I rest my case

I want more proof!
Democracy criticised: The Case for scrutinizing the origins of “Democracy”! Its shabby origins.
“DEMOCRACY”-a word that does not appear in the US contitution or the Magna Carta was used to drum up support against Germany and Italy and it was used to occupy countries in 1945, Partition IRAQ and bifurcate PAKISTAN IN 1971.
“Democracy” was used to destroy the ottoman Empire.
“DEMOCRACY” WAS USED TO DESTROY THE USSR AND OSTRACIZE CUBA
“DEMOCRACY” DOES NOT ALLOW LIBERATION OF HOLY LANDS
THOSE PRESSURING PAKISTAN TO ACCEPT THESE LEADERS NEED TO LOOK AT THE ORIGINS OF “DEMOCRACY”: The words was coined in 1945.
The American Founding Fathers did not “set up a constitutional system in which the power of the state flowed from and is dependent on the power of the people”. These particular ideas may work well as candy for 8th grade (his)tory books but it is a bit far removed from reality. For a dose of reality, we need to know that the word “democracy” does not appear in the constitution of the United States.
As historians Charles Austin Beard and Mary Ritter Beard wrote (1939): “At no time, at no place, in solemn convention assembled, through no chosen agents, had the American people officially proclaimed the United States to be a democracy. The Constitution did not contain the word or any word lending countenance to it, except possibly the mention of ‘We the people,’ in the preamble … When the Constitution was framed, no respectable person called himself a democrat.”
The USA was created as “republic” not a “democracy”. The word democracy was coined in the late 40s to “manufacture consent” for the war against “fascism” and “Nazism” to spread “democracy” and freedom in Europe.
James Madison’s Federalist Paper #10 discusses the issue of Democracies. In it he states: “Democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have in general been as short in their lives, as they have been violent in their deaths. Theoretic politicians, who have patronized this species of Government, have erroneously supposed, that by reducing mankind to a perfect equality in their political rights, they would, at the same time, be perfectly equalized and assimilated in their possessions, their opinions and their passions.” We can see from this that Mr. Madison would never have advocated a pure Democracy for his new nation. wealth4freedom.
About 370 BC, Plato wrote: “A democracy is a state in which the poor, gaining the upper hand, kill some and banish others, and then divide the offices among the remaining citizens equally.”
Alexander Hamilton, in debate, said: “Real liberty is neither found in despotism or the extremes of democracy, but in moderate government.”
“Individual rights are not subject to a public vote; a majority has no right to vote away the rights of a minority; the political function of rights is precisely to protect minorities from oppression by majorities (and the smallest minority on earth is the” Ayn Rand
There are serious flaws in the US constitution, which allows a majority to completely over-rule the rights of minorities or allows a minority opinion to be imposed on the majority if the vote is split. For example, if there are 3 candidates in an election and two get 30% of the vote and the third gets 40% of the vote. Now the person with 40% of the votes gets elected, even though 60% of the people opposed his election. This taken care of on the French and German constitutions by having run-offs.
How about a few quotations demonstrating the disdain our founders held for democracy?
James Madison, Federalist Paper No. 10: In a pure democracy,
“there is nothing to check the inducement to sacrifice the weaker party or the obnoxious individual.”
At the 1787 Constitutional Convention, Edmund Randolph said,
” … that in tracing these evils to their origin every man had found it in the turbulence and follies of democracy.”
John Adams said:
“Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There was never a democracy yet that did not commit suicide.”
Chief Justice John Marshall observed:
“Between a balanced republic and a democracy, the difference is like that between order and chaos.”
In a word or two, the founders knew that a democracy would lead to the same kind of tyranny the colonies suffered under King George III
Not to digress to far, but this is very similar of “manufacturing consent” to spread “democracy” in the Middle East, where we support a minority non-pashtun government in Afghanistan and are now in the process of replacing a secular government with a pro-Iranian ayatollah led theocracy in Iraq. In fact all the founding father, Jefferson, Hamilton repeatedly spoke up AGAINST “democracy” as a system of government for the USA.
However I agree that a system of government however imperfect that strives to allow people to control the government may work well in literate societies. Our glorious experiment in democracy is surely a beacon to the world and yes it is based on the Judeo-Christian-Islamic traditions.
The American Constitution was based on the Magna Carta. The most important part of the American constitution is chapter 39 taken from the Magna Carta.
“Nullus liber homo capiatur vel imprisonetur aut disseisietur de libero tenemento suo, vel libertatibus, vel liberis consuetudinibus suis, aut utlagetur, aut exuletur, aut aliquo modo destruatur, nec super eum ibimus, nec super eum mittemus, nisi per legale judicium parium suorum, vel per legem terr.”
In English this shows up as “No freeman shall be taken, or imprisoned, or be disseised of his freehold, or liberties, or free customs, or be outlawed, or exiled, or any otherwise destroyed; nor will we not pass upon him, nor condemn him, but by lawful judgment of his peers, or by the law of the land.”
Contrary to popular belief, the original Magna Carta was not even written in English. It was translated into Latin from the original Arabic. “Trial by jury” was of course an Arab invention popular in Al-Andulusia (Spain). The Magna Carta was taken from the much despised and misunderstood Shariah Law. See John Maksidi’s research consecrated and published in the North Carolina Law journal (copy can be retrieved or mailed to you). The Bill of Rights were taken from Ibn Tufail, Ibn Haitam and canonized (”canon’ is from the Arabic word “qanoon”
by Hamilton and Jefferson as the Bill of Rights.
“Remember that ….we shall fight ,and we shall fight for 1,000 years as we have fought for 1,000 years in the past….we can continue ! ” (ZAB at the United Nations )

That, Mr. Ansari, is not democracy, has nothing to do with the democratic process, and is not something I am advocating. The simple fact of the matter is that people should have a right to choose who to represent them. Democracy- with free and fair elections- is a far better alternative to dictatorship. And while it’s easy to criticise, do tell me what you’re advocating. What do you think we should do? Let Musharraf do whatever he wants? Isn’t he an American pawn? In fact, isn’t he THE American pawn? Bigger than any other we’ve ever had?
Democracy will not disenfranchise Muslim “power” (whatever that may mean considering we’re not a united people- only our fundamentalists are). Democracy would be a FAR better alternative to Saudi Arabia’s disgusting monarchy where women aren’t allowed to drive, work etc. They can be treated like shit and the law won’t even pretend to help them. Is that what you want? Or perhaps we should return to the Mughal rule where one Emperor controlled all power. Oh wait- we’re already there.
I don’t care how much Socrates, Jefferson etc. ridiculed democracy. Really won’t affect my opinion. Don’t care much for what any misogynist has to say.
Comment by Nabiha Meher — January 17, 2008 @ 5:25 pm
So, what? I don’t even GET half of what Ansari’s trying to say here. That by criticizing Mush, Nabiha and I are automatically pro-PPP or PML-N? Talk about monkey say, monkey do!
And GEEZ, self publicity much? Isn’t your ego bloated enough already?
Oh but you’re quite right when you go on and on (in your various disconnected points) about the US meddling in Pakistani politics- and now it has us in the perfect stranglehold with Musharraf. With him in power, forget democracy, we’ll never have CHANGE. You and your ilk will continue to think in the same box of “PML-Q, PML-N, PPP and (possibly) Tehreek-e-Insaaf”. Until Mush goes, no other options are ever going to present themselves.
You want facts and figures about money stolen? Does Rs. 200 billion sound about OK to you? Because that would be the army’s current share in our private sector assets alone.
Comment by Kamil — January 17, 2008 @ 6:37 pm
Lest we forget: Musharraf spent MILLIONS of dollars promoting his ridiculously self-serving “auto” biography “In the Line of Fire.” None of this money came out of his own pocket. This was all our money- tax money. So that’s why there are no schools, no health care… nothing that our socialist constitution promises us.
If that’s not corruption then bite me in the ass and take a chunk out of it. Go ahead.

“The common man doesn’t understand much…” Yes, go ahead and insult the few who don’t hate you. Apparently Mush thinks we’re not smart people.
